3D Web Interoperability

3D Web Interoperability banner

Our group is developing key guidelines and suggestions to shape interoperable standards that position the web as the heart of the open metaverse. Our approach? We’re diving into real-life situations, identifying essential requirements, and uniting on strategies to create and connect stunning 3D experiences. We’re enhancing the way content is created and securely delivered, supercharging client and server efficiency, and making sure our networks are robust enough for the task. Our goal is to transform the web into a spatial, immersive realm that’s seamless, efficient, engaging and fun for all and remain a core component of the next iteration of the internet.

Our goal is: bringing the web to the open metaverse
Our strategy is: influencing the evolution of web standards
Our tactics include: use case analysis, gap analysis, driving consensus, creating tools
Our priorities are: seamless linked experiences, authoring, clients/servers

Work in Progress

Bi-weekly meetings provide guest speakers, project updates, and discussions.

Current Deliverables

Projects

  • Mechanisms to link and reference virtual worlds and parts thereof
    • Problem Statement: Use cases demonstrate a wide variety of ways that virtual worlds and physical worlds may be linked; How can we distinguish these different modes and their requirements?
  • Functional profiles for Metaverse applications – content interoperability
    • Problem Statement: 3D scenes are built up from a variety of resources, from geometry and materials to lighting, sensors, and rich content models; Can we define levels of 3D functionality useful for the Metaverse?
  • Role-based access and encryption of assets
    • Problem Statement: The Metaverse must include capabilities for both ‘Network’ and ‘Data’ Security; what standards and options govern these? What are their limitations?
  • 3D UserAgent investigation
    • Problem Statement: The UserAgent is a piece of software that interprets a text string from a Web server on behalf of the user. What capabilities could be added to enable an accessible Metaverse?
  • Efficient delivery of 3D experiences
    • Problem Statement: Review and evaluate the current solutions for delivering 3D assets and experiences (x3d, glTf, 3DTile, USDz) and identify gaps and requirements
