Time: 12:00 – 12:50 | Room 203
Speakers: Terry xR Schussler, Senior Director, XR & Metaverse, Deutsche Telekom; Evo Heyning, CEO and Executive Producer, Realitycraft; Ben Erwin, Owner, Powersimple
Description: MetaTr@versal is an event series founded in 2021 to advocate for cooperation on developing interoperability standards between XR Platforms. Using portals as a point of consensus, this initiative gathered industry leaders to make statements in support of tech companies working together to accelerate building what Neil Trevett famously called the “Constellation of Standards that are needed to achieve the Metaverse”. Later, Neil credited the MetaTr@versal series as having been “instrumental” in the founding of the Metaverse Standards Forum by demonstrating the will to build the foundation of the Metaverse with open interoperable standards. Now, “Portal Crawls” have been set up to lead groups to traverse these worlds. At AWE, MSF will host a reunion of the founding fellows of MetaTr@versal to give an update on the state of portals. Terry xR Schussler, Evo Heyning and Ben Erwin will present the findings from the recent Portal Crawls and identify the gaps that remain to transform the Metaverse from a series of “walled gardens” into an immersive digital commons.

Building Open Standards for the Metaverse: Challenges and Progress

Time: 1:00pm – 1:55pm
Location: Grand Ballroom D
Moderator: Anshel Sag, Moor Insights & Strategy
Panelists: Neil Trevett, Metaverse Standards Forum; Kavya Pearlman, XRSI;
Description: At last year’s AWE, leaders of key standards development organizations (SDOs) and industry consortia including the Khronos Group, W3C, OpenAR Cloud, and ASWF discussed the need for more cross-organization collaboration to pave the way for an open, inclusive metaverse. It wasn’t just talk: these organizations have now come together along with hundreds of other SDOs, companies, and academic institutions to form the Metaverse Standards Forum, a venue for cooperation among metaverse stakeholders to foster the development of interoperability standards. The Forum has begun engaging in pragmatic, short-term projects like building a standards registar, coordinating use cases and requirements for input into SDOs, and creating interoperability prototypes, with more to come.

In this panel, leaders of Metaverse Standards Forum member organizations will discuss the interoperability challenges the group is prioritizing today, and how the forum is working to accelerate solutions. Attendees will gain insight into the nuances of topics including 3D asset interoperability; digital fashion; real/virtual world integration; and privacy, cybersecurity, and identity. The panel will explore current possibilities, challenges, and limitations within these domains, and discuss how attendees can contribute to the formation of an open metaverse.
