Special SDO Session – Geospatial Standards to Address the Requirements of Real World Use Cases

The Metaverse Standards Forum organized Special SDO Session invites Forum members and Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) to present relevant ongoing or completed work to the MSF and the public.
RegisterGeospatial Standards to Address the Requirements of Real World Use Cases
When it comes to metaverse use cases that include the real world or digital twins involving geospatially-anchored objects or places, there may be confusion or misunderstandings about the location, orientation (pose) and view delivered in the metaverse experience. To reduce errors or inconsistencies and to ensure interoperability and highest possible alignment and to deliver accurately-positioned experiences, developers can implement international, royalty-free geospatial protocols and standards.
The Open Geospatial Consortium’s (OGC) standards activities include development of requirements and other pre- and post-standardization steps and a catalog of fully-developed and royalty-free standards for geospatial data and location-based services to ensure interoperability accuracy and reusability across different systems and applications. This Special SDO Session will provide background and current status of many OGC activities and standards that are highly relevant to Metaverse developers and standards experts.
Standards and use cases to be showcased include:
- GeoPose for exchanging geospatial position and orientation,
- CityGML for defining a twin of an urban environment upon which AR content can be registered;
- Visual positioning;
- MUDDI for visualization of underground infrastructure;
- IndoorGML to “see” the field of view of security cameras in indoor spaces;
- X3D Geospatial for the 3D Web.
Presenters:
- Scott Simmons, Chief Standards Officer | OGC
- Steve Smyth, OGC CityGML SWG and OGC GeoPose SWG architect and co-chair | OGC
- Mike McCann, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute | Web3D Consortium
