Evolving the Web for Spatial Computing, Physical AI, and Robotics
Date | Time: Wednesday, December 9 | 10:00 – 10:25
Location: MDLP: Track Room 2 (Coffee Lounge)
Description: The web browser ended the walled gardens of the early internet. Spatial computing is waiting for the same move. AR glasses, robots, autonomous vehicles, and AI agents all need to discover and interact with services anchored to the real world, from many independent providers, composing into one scene, with no installs and no gatekeeper. The web was never built to do this. It needs to evolve.
The Open Metaverse Browser Initiative (OMBI), hosted at the Metaverse Standards Forum, has released the world’s first open-source metaverse browser engine, built on open standards the industry already uses: OpenXR, glTF, WebAssembly, and SPIR-V. The engine brings native 3D rendering, visual positioning, and multi-origin spatial composition to today’s web browsers and devices, while also powering standalone metaverse browsers purpose-built for AR glasses and spatial computing. It gives enterprises what they have been missing: interoperability, data ownership, and frictionless access without platform or device lock-in.
Neil Trevett and Sean Mann discuss how open standards are extending the web into spatial computing, and what the first working engine reveals about the architecture required. For the enterprises, hardware makers, and robotics companies, building the foundation is no longer hypothetical. The question is who helps shape it.
